Long before becoming a physician and healthcare innovator, Dr. Ramon Tallaj worked in horse stables as a child in the Dominican Republic. Encouraged by his grandmother to pursue his dreams, he developed a lifelong devotion to Thoroughbred racing. His admiration for great runners led to his horses competing at Royal Ascot and France’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
In 2020, he founded RT Racing Stable, with over 930 starts at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course. A supporter of the New York-Bred Program, he expanded his Kentucky breeding operations through RT Bloodstock, selling yearlings at Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton. In 2023, Sun Thunder carried his colors in the Kentucky Derby, making him the first Dominican owner to compete.
Beyond racing, Dr. Tallaj brings over 40 years of experience in internal medicine and public health. As founder and chairman of SOMOS Community Care, he pioneered a prevention-focused care model under New York’s Medicaid Redesign Program, building a network of more than 2,500 healthcare providers serving over one million Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries across New York City’s most underserved communities. During the pandemic, he led mass testing and vaccination efforts at Aqueduct Racetrack. His leadership has earned him the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, recognition among Modern Healthcare’s Top 20 Innovators, and multiple Emmy Awards for public health communications.
Dr. Tallaj understands the economic realities facing New York horsemen and the importance of a sustainable racing industry. Drawing on New York State policy and advocacy experience, he would represent owners’ and trainers’ interests before industry leaders and policymakers. His healthcare experience supports preventive healthcare for backstretch workers and their families through NYTHA’s programs. He is equally committed to advancing equine health, safety, and veterinary care, ensuring that the horses at the heart of the sport remain central to its future.
