I am seeking re-election to the NYTHA Board as an owner representative. I serve as the chair of NYTHA’s communications committee and work closely with our communications professional and board leadership to broaden awareness of racehorse ownership opportunities and the growing importance and economic benefit of our industry across New York State.
My love for horse racing began in 1971 at The Saratogian newspaper as The Pink Sheet editor. I went on to a career in newspaper, government relations, and Fortune 500
corporate communications.
In 2005, I established Bona Venture Stables, headquartered in Saratoga Springs. BVS is a family business with my wife, Sarah, serving as COO, and daughters Claire and Maura, and sons-in-law Chris and Joe, providing ownership assistance and recruiting new partners.
BVS has introduced more than 200 first-time owners to New York racing. We maintain a string of 6-8 horses, achieving success at the claiming, state-bred stakes, graded stakes, and Breeders’ Cup level.
- My communications experience, focused on crises, government relations, executive media training, and media relations, positions me to assist NYTHA efforts to:
- Introduce a new generation of owners, ensuring a vibrant future for the industry
- Advocate on behalf of individual and small ownership groups to ensure their concerns are heard and addressed
- Continue improving the living/working conditions of backstretch workers
- Support aftercare programs to ensure safe retirements for racehorses
- Develop new initiatives to educate NYS legislators on the positive economic benefits to local, regional, and state economies and job growth, ensuring long-term health of our sport.
I am a graduate of St. Bonaventure University, having served for 17 years as a Trustee and five years as Vice Chair of the board.
