HORSEMEN TO PAY FOR ANABOLIC STEROID TESTING
The Board of Directors of the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (NYTHA) would like to thank Senator Joseph Bruno, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and the entire New York State Legislature for the passage of Bill S-7866-A.
The bill allows for an additional 1% of purses dedicated to NYTHA (which was approved last year) to be extended for another year. Of this (horsemen’s money) approximately half or $500,000 will be donated to Cornell University to purchase state of the art analytical equipment to test for anabolic steroids and other medications that are difficult to detect and confirm. The other half of the money will be dedicated to enhance the benevolence and educational programs for backstretch employees and their families.
The NYTHA has been working with state leaders and their staffs for months on this initiative. We are very proud to have the horsemen in New York on the forefront of providing a safe and level playing field and are also willing to put their money where their mouths are and contribute to the cost of that process. We are confident that Governor Paterson will see the benefits of this bill and thank him in advance for his quick approval.
Richard Violette, President NYTHA
